Yeah ...
TheLodgeman did alright in his 1st season too !
Turkey season always starts with a little pre-season scouting ... and this year was no different. I found several flocks working some fields. Once you find thier strutting grounds ... you need to get yourself in position. Calling is only part of the hunt, ... putting yourself in the path is just as important.
So, ... with prior knowledge ... and two first season permits, ... plus hunting with Doug Hammer, Steve Berry, and Marc Stone ... I had a action packed 5 days of hunting.
But ... I first tried my luck and "catch and release" turkey hunting. If you've never caught a turkey without hurting it. Well, you just ain't a turkey hunter !
Here, ... I pactice my " Turkey Whispering" tactics. I softly whispered into the turkey's ear asking it to look at the camera and smile. She did good !
And ... I prepare to "release" the turkey. Really, ... I caught a turkey and released it and have a witness to the adventure.
I did manage to harvest a nice young Jake ... which I'll always say ... one in the hand is better than others in the bush !!!
With only five days and two tags (and hunting with others) I ain't too picky !
But ... on the last day ... I had good luck and score filling both tags only a few hours apart.
My second bird's beard was average and weight was only 21 pounds, but ...
The spurs were nearly 1.75 long .... wow ... this bird was a good one !
Season two is under way ... and hopefully Joe and Casey will score next.
