Goose hunting with the ...
SLOW TALKERS DUCK CLUB
I was watching the temperatures drop and geese flying all about. With corn fields a plenty and very few ponds with open water, ... the geese were looking to land. I scouted the birds one evening and with my newly found knowledge made a phone call. I called Rod Nicholson. He and follow Slow Talkers club member Bill Conklin agreed to take me up on a early morning goose gathering.
With our plan laid out, ... our morning started.
With the eastern sky lighting the way, ... we made our approach to the blind.
The clouds rolled in as fast as the geese. But once the calling was done ... we had our limit on the ground. OK ... on the ICE. Rod and Bill sure know how to call geese into your lap. You won't find two better callers. This photo shows 4 of the six geese in one frame.
Here ... Bill and Rod wrestle the john boat into position ... for a little ice fun.
And here ... the LOGO of the Famous Club .... and Illinois Calling Champions ... Rod and Bill.
Too bad Bill can't throw gear any better though. ( and good thing the pond is froze ) We started out picking up gear first ... then moved on to goose retrieval.
Now, ain't none of us small guys ... and with this little duck damn near under ... we thought it best if only two of us got in the boat.
So Rod and "The Conk" took off for ice busting fun.
Made it to one goose ... only five to go !
The sun peeked back out for a brief moment .... just enough to cause a cool glare. So, I took this photo as Rod and Bill seem to be in white-out conditions.
Another one ... picked up.
Rod says .... number 5, only one more to go.
And since it was in a finger needing the boat pulled out then placed back on the ice, ... Rod and Bill thought it best for me to retrieve one too. It was close enough to the edge, we merely kept a line on the boat and they pulled it back.
This one was the last, ... and you can see, after it broke through the ice ... broken chunks actually froze back on the goose. Now that's put'n a chill on your gander !
With our final bird in hand ... and I not knowing how my camera timer works ... this shot was taken because we, ... or I , ... thought the photo was already done. But, ... all in all ... we have 6 geese down, our limit ... and a fine morning of hunting with good friends.
Let me know your thoughts ....
